The Federation Starfleet (often simply called Starfleet) is the exploration and defense arm of the United Federation of Planets. It was founded in 2161, Starfleet Command operates under the Federation Council (in recent times, de facto under Admiral Doenitz) and is bound by Starfleet General Orders and Regulations.
During the Federation Civil War a rift appeared in ships that supported Doenitz' regime and ones who supported Admiral LoDona and his ideals of 'freeing' the Federation.
The 52nd Fleet is a divison in Starfleet.
