The Ch'mok is a traditional trial of redress on the frontier planet of Axtis III, whereby any issue that exists between two people on that planet can be decided. It issimilar to a trial by combat. When someone has an issue with another, he can go to the Council and invoke the Ch'mok. This consists of three challenges. The first one is a wilderness test. Each person enters the forest, and using only primitive weapons, must hunt a dagger beast. Whoever finds one first, wins the challenge. The second task is to cut out the animal's liver and cook it into a paste. The paste is to be eaten. Whoever lasts the longest without puking out their guts, is the winner. The final challenge is an unarmed fight in the arena. The only rule, is no killing. Last man standing is the winner. Whoever wins two of three, claims the Ch'mok.
During the hunt each hunter was allowed to have an aide go with him. This person could carry supplies and treat any wounds the hunter suffered, but could give absolutely no help beyond those two things.
If the winner is the one that invoked the Ch'mok, the loser must answer to the challenge. He must do whatever is necessary to resolve the issue. If the challenger loses, he is banished from Axtis forever. If they refuse, they are put to death. It is considered one of the highest laws on the colony world.
Each hunter was allowed to have an aid go with him. The aid was similar to a squire for a Knight in ancient times. The aid could carry supplies and treat any wounds the hunter suffered, but he could give absolutely no help beyond that.
In 2414, Ben Soma used the Ch'mok to force Turok to relinquish all control and claim over Marah Neru to him, in order to free her from bondage. On the hunt, Ben was attended by his good friend Sanok.
