The United States of America (commonly called the USA, America or just The States) was a large nation that existed on Earth from roughly 1776 to some time during World War Three.
USA's space agency, called the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (or NASA) made a lot of important early space discoveries, which paved the way for Zefram Cochrane to invent Warp Drive, which of course, paved the way for the Federation and Starfleet.
