Matthew was born the middle child of three to Heather Brownlee and a Vulcan man named Arev. He was born while his mother was on business in the Earth city of Athens on December 11, 2357.

After her business trip, Heather returned to the family home in ShirKahr, on Vulcan. His father, Arev, was stationed at the shipyards there.
