''' WARP PROPULSION SYSTEM '''


Type: First-Run Advanced Propulsion Drive (APD-02) designed by the ASDB and developed by Mercurion Inova Inc. This lighter, high-power core utilizes swirl technology instead of a reaction chamber. Additional improvements to Plasma Transfer Conduit technology makes the drive system energy efficient and allows for the variable warp geometry evinced by its maneuverable nacelles. 


Improved verterion coil manufacture allows for smaller nacelles producing superior warp fields.  Information on this Warp Drive can be found in any Starfleet Library or Omnipedia.


Normal Cruising Speed: Warp 7.5

Maximum Speed: Warp 9.975 for 12 hours


Note:  Vessels equipped with the APD-02 

( M/ARA) Drive System no longer have the maximum cruising speed limit of Warp 5 imposed after the discovery of subspace damaged caused by high-warp speeds.


The APD-02 warp drive system was adapted from the APD-01 used on the Intrepid Class and following Bellerophon Class.


APD-02 is composed of more durable alloys able to withstand the higher temperatures caused by a more efficient matter/anti-matter reaction and developed by Lieutenant Commander Sekal for use on the ship.


Due to the lower output of low energy plasma additional ports for drawing off high energy plasma have been added to power 1) The phased energy weapons and 2) To supplement ships general power needs in concert with impulse power (Auxiliary power).


Power shunts, interlocks and buffers have also been upgraded in order to protect system power from the greater energy supply and avoid overload and burnout.


Under current technology limitations the draw upon the warp drive systems is severely reduced with maximum load rated at roughly 40%.


With increased technology and more durable materials using more power that energy draw is expected to increase over time.


The skipping feature introduced by a power surge during the maximum warp sustainability test and sensor readings taken at the time suggest that the energy field in the new crystals anchored in subspace has resulted in a new, safe mode of travel at speeds above warp 10. The new speed ratings above warp 10 are yet to be determined but are theorized to be at least that provided by quantum slipstream technology and are on par with that supplied by travel within the subspace river formerly used by the fleet.


It is additionally theorized that the new drive will provide access to that lost tributary in the future. This theory was tested upon the return to Mars from Bajor and the subspace tunnel at transwarp speeds resulted in a reduction of time upon the return of 83.3%. The transwarp jump was an unqualified success and opens up the quadrant at a far greater rate.


''' IMPULSE PROPULSION SYSTEM '''     


Type: Outfitted with twin fusion-powered Krayne-20 impulse drives mounted on the aft section of the nacelle pylons. Built by Krayne Industries, the K-20 drives were specially designed for the Illuminar class with tolerances built-in for the mobile nature of their mounts, as well as variable ethereal vanes for direction of hydrogen flow.


Output: The impulse engine can propel an Intrepid class starship at speeds just under .25c, at “Full Impulse” and an upper ceiling of .80c at three quarters the speed of light. 


Generally, Starfleet Vessels are restricted to .25c speeds to avoid the more dramatic time dilation effects of higher relativistic speeds. However, such restrictions can be overridden at the behest of the ship’s captain.
