He was the only child or James and Patricia Sykes and was expected to become a Starfleet doctor, with aspirations of being Chief Medical Officer someday. He did enter into medicine per se, however, Robert wanted more excitement, so instead, his career branched out a different way, as an medic, in the Starfleet Marines.
