Sola Malinae was an Irlixian geneticist who specialized in extremophiles and exobiology. She was a native of the planet Irlix and was considered the leading expert in her field. She was selected in 2394 to head up a top secret genetics program involving the remains of the crew taken from the wreckage of the Federation starship the USS Medea. Her work entailed categorizing the various species on the ship from their remains as well as identifying physiological processes. Among her jobs was the categorization and development of viral weapons derived from the natural bacterium and viruses that the Medea crew had developed immunities to, which was to benefit the war effort against the rivals of the Gab Union. She served on the project throughout the entirety of the Technology Wars, that raged on that planet as a result of the tensions caused by the advanced technology that was seen to be in place on the crash site of the Medea. Her work aided the Gab Union, later renamed the Rhone Union, greatly and was instrumental in winning the war. For her efforts she was awarded the order of the Neuron, the highest scientific honor available to a civilian. Among her other accolades was the deciphering of several genomes of the species found at the crash site as well as detailed physiological work. Later when Khoda Rhone came to power, she served at the Top secret Seliya Facility and there met Lieutenant Helen Baker, a medical officer from the USS Medea who had been on an away mission to the planet's surface when the crash occurred. Sola and Helen became friends and discussed medical technology, diseases and pathology for a few years. However in 2395, Helen suffered from a relapse of Rigelian fever, and succumbed to the disease when Ryetalyn could not be synthesized to keep it in check. Sola also contracted the disease and suffered with it for three years, undergoing a number of experimental treatments. Although the treatments saved her life, Sola suffered from severe neural degeneration which confined her to a wheelchair. Once it was determined that the disease was no longer capable of transmission and that it would not resurface, Sola was released from her scientific work and forced to retire. Her daughter Ios Malinae who was the acting chief archivist at the facility remained employed with the projects there, although later she was reduced in position to that of a clerk when racial tensions made her an undesirable. only her mother's immense contributions and prestige prevented her from becoming unemployed. In 2413, Sola was introduced to Mike Rosenbauer a member of the USS Rosenante's away team sent down to Irlix in an effort to locate and rescue the crew of the USS Bohrs who were being held by Khoda Rhone at the Seliya Facility. Rosenbauer had earlier that day rescued her daughter from and attempted assault and rape by Gab males. Sola immediately recognized him as a Human and tasked her daughter to aid Mike and the Rosenante crew in tribute to her long dead friend Helen Baker. ---- Sola Malinae first appeared in the USS Rosenante mission: The Gilded Man
