Revelation Virus
The Revelation Virus is a deadly genetically engineered disease that was released aboard Starbase Geneva by the hate group Humans for Humanity in 2407.
The special design of the Virus only affect humans, which suffer the full affects of the disease. non-humans can only be carriers of the disease, causing it to spread rapidly among mixed cultural habitats and stations.
The Virus was delivered by the self-proclaimed prophet who called himself Revelation. He infected himself in order to achieve maximum spread of the virus rapidly and also to avoid premature detection by Starfleet Personnel. He was therefore Patient Zero for the disease, although by the time that the disease was far enough along, he had already managed to spread the contagion among a significant portion of the station's populous.
The disease also spread to the then docked USS Nimitz. Later, upon his death, which occurred during a mental probe by counselor Divon Lronen, revelation would become the disembodied Revelation Entity that was nearly responsible for the death of Harry Samuel Doorman.
The virus consists of 7 proteins and eight strands of ribonucleic acid (RNA), which carry the code for making the proteins. To invade a host, the virus shell includes specific proteins that bind to receptors on the outside of red corpuscles. This is how the virus enters the blood stream. The act of binding draws the virus into the cell membrane. It then fuses and moves through it, emerging into the cytoplasm of the cell. Once there, the shell opens, releasing the ribonucleic acid inside.
The virus then travels quickly throughout the body. Reaching all major organs, central nervous system and brain. Once inside the cerebral cortex, the virus attacks the axons which connect neurons. The axons are surrounded by a fatty insulating sheath called myelin, this is used as an energy source for the virus. It 'feeds' on the myelin. Death occurs within 4-48 hours, and is dependent upon the initial health of the infected individual.
The disease was eventually eradicated by Doctor Wendy Kildare, but not before it had killed nearly one hundred people that had been infected.
