Pihi was born in New Zealand. She was born without an optic nerve, and received a VISOR implant when she was about 5 years old. The surgeons had to graft nerve tissue to allow her to brain to receive the signals transmitted by the device. When she was older, she refused the possibility of ocular implants, as there was a risk they would not
Growing up, she was close to her maternal grandparents, and even at a young age, they would take her into the wilds of New Zealand, helping her develop her other senses to compensate for the loss of sight. Even after the implant, Pihi would travel in the wilds without it, so she was not completely reliant on the technology, nor became to dependant on it.
In school, she was a bit of a loner and private person. In part of her own choosing, in part the usual teen issues with her being different. She did meet Tui Taimona, a test pilot from New Zealand, who introduced her to flying. Tui becan to teach Pihi to pilot various crafts. Pihi adopted to the freedom of flying quickly.
She enrolled in Star Fleet to get away from the mundane. Her goal was to be the best pilot in Star Fleet.
