Starfleet Corps of Engineers
The Star Fleet Corps of Engineers are the technical problem solvers of Starfleet. These people keep the vast number of unmanned stations and sensor posts. At least that is what they do on the quiet days, but not every day is quiet. Frequently engineering emergencies crop up throughout the Federation, and when they do it is the Elite members of the SCE's Emergency Response teams that are dispatched to fix the problem. From a new piece of Alien Technology to a colony's weather control system going haywire for no reason, these teams can deal with any technical situation that the galaxy throws at them.
After the Dominion War, the Federation has increased the security of in the Sol system, to go along with that four Emergency Response Squads of the SCE have been assigned to Utopia Planitia and the Mars Defense Perimeter, ready and willing to assist in any situation that may face Sol's line of Defense.
CO - The Squad CO organizes and leads the unit, while they may have had a specialty at some point, they are expected to be more of a generalist in this position.
XO - Second in Command of the Squad, same generalist responsibilities as the CO.
Specialists - Besides the CO and XO, the team is made up of a variety of specialists. Due to the nature and requirements of Starfleet, most specialists are enlisted as they are required to take specialties, and Officers are required to be generalists by nature. However, there are still officers that excel in certain areas. Bellow are some examples (although certainly not all of the possibilities) of specialties.
Power Systems Specialists - Every alien race has developed unique ways of powering their electronic and mechanical devises, and with scientists and researches developing new methods everyday, these engineers are very important. Tasked with analyzing the power systems of any systems their teams work with, they are an important part of figuring out how new technology works, and how the malfunctioning systems broke.
Structural Specialist - These engineers are experts in the physical side of engineering. They are experts in how things are put together, how they are made and what they are made of. These specialists study the make up and arrangement of every species equipment and group they can get their hands on.
Tactical Specialist - As the name implies, these engineers specialize in offensive and defensive systems, not in how to use them in battle but in how they work and how they can break. These men and women know what signs they leave behind after use and all of the different kinds of Tactical systems used in the Alpha and Beta quadrants. Do to the nature of their specialty they also have some degree of tactical training, as they are expected to know a good deal about booby traps and how to deal with them and defeat them.
Computer Specialist - A fairly straight forward specialty, these engineers are specialist with all types of computer systems, and are able to adapt to any new systems they might encounter with a degree of ease that other specialists.
Subspace Specialists - The Borg use transwarp conduits, every member of the Federation uses Warp drives and subspace communications, and their are a variety of other races and governments that use subspace for other purposes, as such, Engineers who specialize in subspace mechanics are of vital importance when dealing with the emergencies that the SCE have to deal with. Researchers with the Daystrom Institute have caused a variety of emergent situations that required the clean up and knowledge of a Subspace Mechanic, and they are just one source.
In addition to the above Specialties, the SCE have been know to employ a variety of other scientists with advanced knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, biology, linguistics and sociology. In the SCE's opinion, if the knowledge will help them solve the problems they are faced with faster, they are more than willing to include the people who have that knowledge.
